ISO 9001 SOP Requirements: What Auditors Actually Look For

ISO 9001 and Documentation Requirements
ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS). While the standard doesn't prescribe a specific document format, it does require organizations to maintain "documented information" for their processes. Not sure what an SOP is? Start there first.
What Auditors Look For
During an ISO 9001 audit, assessors evaluate:
- Process documentation — Are your key processes defined and documented?
- Consistency — Do employees actually follow the documented procedures?
- Version control — Is there a clear revision history and approval workflow?
- Accessibility — Can staff easily access current versions of procedures?
- Continuous improvement — Are procedures regularly reviewed and updated?
Mandatory Documented Procedures
While ISO 9001:2015 is less prescriptive than earlier versions, you still need documented information for:
- Quality policy and objectives
- Scope of the QMS
- Process interactions (often shown as flowcharts)
- Criteria for evaluation of suppliers
- Monitoring and measurement resources
- Records of competence, training, and awareness
- Nonconformity and corrective action records
Tips for Passing Your Audit
- Use flowcharts alongside written procedures to show process flow clearly — learn more about when to use flowcharts vs SOPs.
- Include cross-references between SOPs and the ISO 9001 clauses they address.
- Maintain an evidence inventory linking each requirement to supporting documentation.
- Automate version control to eliminate the risk of outdated documents being used.
